It was different than Robert had been, when she had been young, so young, in the icehouse. Trillium asked Coral before they did anything. To walk with her, to talk with her, to touch her hand, to kiss her. Mr. Fall liked that Trillium asked if he could go with her to the river that ran through the valley behind the hills, if he could join their fire at night.

Mr. Fall liked Trillium in a way that felt easy to Coral. The men seemed close in age. They remembered some, though not all, of the same things: for instance, drinking cow’s milk. Trillium remembered glass bottles distributed by volunteers. Mr. Fall remembered cartons, children’s pictures printed on them. He had heard stories about it, if he hadn’t seen it himself. Trillium didn’t remember that part.

“Why children?” he had asked.

“They were lost,” Mr. Fall said.

Looking back, Coral felt she should have known. She should have guessed something was about to go wrong. She was happy for the first time in what felt like forever, hopeful—but that remark about the lost children stuck in her brain. Something bad was going to happen.
